Working with Breath Architecture, RB Landscapes has designed and constructed a concept for a new house in Northcote. The client desired the landscape concept to reinforce the architectural concept of carving, while providing a striking but practical landscape inspired by nature for their young family.

The design is centred around the backyard, where native vegetation creates depth and visual barrier to the existing studio. Featuring a fire pit, rain garden, and stone wall, the garden links back to the shou-sugi-ban treatment of the house exterior through burnt sculptural tree branches. A movable veggie box/seat and rebound wall transforms an existing concrete area into a multipurpose space.

The front garden uses native vegetation to screen the house form the street and provide shade on the northern aspect. Large honey granite stones are cut into the deck continuing the concept of carving and bring the materiality from the backyard through to the front.
